Checklist

Local SEO Audit Checklist for Small Business Websites

Local search is won on consistency and proof, not on volume of content. This is the checklist we run against every prospect's site before deciding whether local SEO is the biggest opportunity on the table.

On-page

The basics that most small business sites still fail:

  • Title tag contains the service and the city
  • One H1 per page, describing the page's actual subject
  • Meta description under 160 characters and written for a human
  • Name, address and phone number in text, not inside an image
  • A dedicated page per service and per location served
  • LocalBusiness structured data with hours and geographic area

Listings and consistency

Business name, address and phone must match character for character across the map listing, the website footer and every directory. Inconsistency is the single most common reason a business with good reviews still does not rank in its own suburb.

Reputation

Review count and recency both matter, and unanswered negative reviews cost more than their star rating suggests. A business with strong reviews and a weak website is the ideal prospect: the demand is already proven, the site is the bottleneck.

Technical hygiene

Mobile responsiveness, HTTPS, a working sitemap, no accidental noindex on live pages, and a load time that does not punish mobile visitors. These do not win rankings on their own, but any one of them missing can prevent everything else from working.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Listing and on-page corrections often move local visibility within a few weeks; competitive service terms in a large city take considerably longer and depend on reviews and links.

Can this checklist be automated?

Most of it. On-page tags, structured data, indexability, speed and mobile behaviour can all be scored automatically, which is what makes auditing a large prospect list practical.
